Five Element
Stress Assessment

This assessment draws on the ancient framework of the Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water — which in Traditional Chinese Medicine correspond to different constitutional types, organ systems, seasons, and patterns of response to stress.

By understanding your predominant element type, we can better support your wellbeing through targeted herbal, nutritional, and lifestyle guidance. There are no right or wrong answers — simply respond as honestly as you can.

How to Complete This Assessment

This assessment has three questionnaires. For each statement, select the number that best reflects your experience. The scale meanings differ between questionnaires — you will see a reminder at the top of each one.

Questionnaire 1 scale:
0Never
1Rarely
2Occasionally
3Often
4Constantly
Questionnaires 2 & 3 scale:
0Strongly disagree
1Disagree
2Neutral
3Agree
4Strongly agree

What is an Adaptation Type?

An Adaptation Type is a way of understanding how we cope with stressful situations. It manifests as an interconnected body-mind dynamic — and in Chinese Medicine, this dynamic is mirrored in the Five Elements.

We all carry something of all five elements within us. However, it is common to have one or two elemental mind-body patterns that are dominant. These patterns show up in our emotional responses, physical tendencies, and the way we meet stress.

Imbalances can be addressed through diet, lifestyle, meditation, herbs, essential oils, acupuncture, time in nature, and many other natural therapies.

Your two highest-scoring element types will be identified as your Primary and Secondary types. Results are calculated automatically when you complete all three questionnaires.

Your Details

Questionnaire One of Three

Stress Response Symptoms

Under prolonged or significant stress, how often do you experience the following? Score each statement from 0 (Never) to 4 (Constantly).

Questionnaire Two of Three

Personality Tendencies

These statements describe tendencies that relate to the five element types. Answer as honestly as possible — many traits are not necessarily desirable, but identifying them helps build an accurate picture. Score from 0 (Strongly disagree) to 4 (Strongly agree).

Questionnaire Three of Three

Adaptation & Strengths

These statements describe how you respond to stressful situations. Grade these based on how you have actually responded to previous stressful situations. Score from 0 (Strongly disagree) to 4 (Strongly agree).

A Guiding Principle

When you express the negative characteristics of an Adaptation Type, healing is found through the positive characteristics of that same Adaptation Type.
